BHEL bags "Industrial Excellence Award" from the Indian Nuclear Society.
In recognition of its role in the development and manufacture of nuclear equipment for Nuclear Power Plants and research projects, Navratna engineering and manufacturing enterprise, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), has been conferred the Indian Nuclear Society (INS)'s 'Industrial Excellence Award' 2004-05. Significantly, BHEL is the only company to be selected for the coveted award for the year.
Carrying a Silver Plaque and a citation, the prestigious award was presented by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh to the Chairman and Managing Director of BHEL, Mr. Ashok K. Puri , at a ceremony organised as part of the 16th INS Annual Conference (INSAC-2005), here today.
Presented annually to an individual or a group belonging to Indian industry, which has made a significant contribution in the nuclear field through innovative technological / management approaches during the previous three years, the award has been won by BHEL's Tiruchirapalli Unit.
BHEL is a pioneer in the development and manufacture of nuclear equipment in the country and has rich experience and expertise gained over the last 35 years . The company's Advanced Technology Products division is engaged in the design and manufacture of nuclear equipment. Notably, the division does not have any technical collaboration for design and manufacture of equipment and the technology has been developed in-house.
The division has supplied state-of-the-art equipment such as Nuclear Steam Generators, Reactor Headers, Heat Exchangers etc. for Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS), Narora Atomic Power Project (NAPP), Kaiga (Karnataka), Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP), Tarapore Atomic Power Project (TAPP) and other power stations, besides equipment required for nuclear research for Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Institute for Plasma Research. The ATP division has also supplied equipment for the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam twenty years ago, which has performed exceedingly well since then.
Headed by the Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister of India, Dr. R. Chidambaram, the Indian Nuclear Society was set up with the objective of promoting nuclear science, engineering and technology in the country.
