BHEL outbids European MNCs and Indian majors; Wins contract for country’s Largest Rating Transformers from Adani Power Ltd.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has once again demonstrated its competitive edge by winning a contract for the manufacture and supply of India’s highest rating 400 MVA, 400 kV generator transformers, against stiff competition from European MNCs and Indian companies.
Valued at over Rs.182 Million, the order has been placed on BHEL by Adani Power Ltd. for their upcoming 3x330 MW Mundra Power Project.
Significantly, no other manufacturer in India has so far manufactured transformers of this rating and this contract will open up a new line of business for BHEL for the manufacture and supply of 400 MVA, 400 kV 3-phase generator transformers. With this, BHEL will be able to secure orders for such transformers for 330 MW thermal sets.
BHEL is also presently executing a contract for on-shore supplies for the + 500 kV, 2,500MW HVDC Ballia-Bhiwadi project of PowerGrid. The highest value order for BHEL in its transmission business, it envisages manufacture and supply of 498 MVA, single-phase three winding transformers. Notably, these are also the highest rating, largest size transformers of their type so far and are being manufactured in India for the first time by BHEL. The World Bank funded project was quoted along with Siemens AG as consortium partner and won under intense International Competitive Bidding (ICB).
BHEL is the largest manufacturer of transformers in India, having supplied more than 4,000 transformers, aggregating to over 2,50,000 MVA in cumulative capacity for transmission and distribution networks, which are the mainstay of the Indian Grid. These have been supplied to all major utilities in the country including SEBs, NTPC, PowerGrid etc.
On the export front, the company has supplied transformers to more than 20 countries around the world including Libya, Oman, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Zambia.
