Equipment performance pays rich dividends;BHEL wins Mega Contract for equipment to generate 1500 MW of power in Maharashtra

New Delhi, February 6: Against International Competitive Bidding (ICB), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has bagged orders for the supply and installation of the Main Plant Package at two power stations in Maharashtra, involving 3 units of 500 MW each.

Cumulatively valued at over Rs.39,000 Million, the orders have been placed on BHEL by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MAHAGENCO), for one 500 MW unit at Khaperkheda Thermal Power Station (TPS) Expansion Project and two 500 MW units at Bhusawal TPS Expansion Project. The contracts are a testimony to the customer’s confidence in BHEL’s capabilities and proven technological excellence.

Significantly, with this, the BHEL’s Power Sector order booking has crossed the Rs.200,000 Million mark in a single year, for the first time in the history of the company.

Slated for synchronisation during the 11th Plan, these units will add 36 million units every day to the grid on commissioning. BHEL’s scope of work involves design, engineering manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of Steam Turbines, Generators, Boilers, state-of-the-art Controls & Instrumentation for the entire main plant and Electricals, besides associated Auxiliaries.

Khaperkheda TPS is already equipped with four BHEL-built units of 210 MW each, whereas Bhusawal TPS is equipped with two BHEL-built units of 210 MW each. Notably, the Bhusawal units were commissioned more than 25 years ago. All these units have been performing exceedingly well since commissioning.

For MAHAGENCO, the company is presently executing orders for the main plant package for four 250 MW units - two each at their New Parli TPS and Paras TPS expansion project.

BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 500 MW rating and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating for power projects, suited to Indian conditions, using Indian as well as imported coal. So far, orders for 47 numbers of 500 MW rating sets have been won, of which 27 have been commissioned.

Aimed at gearing up to meet the country's capacity addition targets towards the agenda of providing ‘Power to all by 2012’, BHEL has invested more than Rs.12,000 Million for holistic modernization and capacity expansion of its facilities from 6,000 MW per annum at present to 10,000 MW per annum. BHEL also has plans to further increase its capacity to 15,000 MW as required by the country’s power sector. Besides, BHEL has taken necessary steps for upgradation/ introduction of new technologies and has tied up to acquire new technology to produce thermal power equipment with supercritical parameters for the next higher rating 800 MW sets and above.
