BHEL achieves another breakthrough in Libya Secures EPC contract for 300 MW Gas Turbine based Power Plant
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited BHEL has achieved another breakthrough in Libya with a prestigious export contract for setting up a 300 MW Gas Turbine based power plant on Engineering, Procurement and Construction EPC basis.
Valued at Rs.6,500 Million, the order envisages setting up the 300 MW Western Mountain Power Project Extension in Libya for General Electricity Company of Libya GECOL.
Significantly, the order comes close on the heels of the successful turnkey execution of a Rs.14,000 Million contract for the 600 MW 4x150 MW Western Mountain Gas Turbine based Power Project, which is also the largest Gas Turbine based power plant installed by BHEL so far. The excellent performance of the plant paved the way for the customer reaffirming its confidence in the companys capabilities.
The present contract envisages two more Gas Turbine Generating units of 150 MW each as an extension to the existing power plant. The equipment for the power plant shall be supplied from BHELs manufacturing units at Haridwar, Bhopal, Jhansi, Bangalore, Chennai and Ranipet. BHELs Power Sector Division shall carry out the overall engineering of the project and execute all site activities including erection and commissioning of the plant.
BHEL made a foray in the Libyan market with a turnkey contract for the 2x120 MW Tripoli West Power Station Extension. The award of such an order in the seventies, amidst stiff competition from the developed world was a measure of recognition of BHELs standing in the international field. Significantly, the power plant is giving excellent performance for over 25 years.
Over the years, BHEL has established its footprints in all the six inhabited continents of the world, spanning around 70 countries and its technical competence has earned worldwide acclaim. Riding high on its dominant domestic position, BHEL is taking long strides to become a major global player by enhancing its presence in international markets. It has identified overseas business as one of its thrust areas as part of its Strategic Plan 2012. The company is targeting a six fold increase in its physical exports from the current levels by 2012.
