BHEL achieves milestone in the Middle East market with the commissioning of another Gas Turbine-based Power Plant in Oman

India’s largest Power Project exporter, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved one more milestone in the Middle-East region with the commissioning of yet another Gas Turbine Generating unit in Oman.

The 26 MW Gas Turbine Generator was successfully put on stream at the Oman Refinery and Petrochemical plant in Muscat. Significantly, this is the second such unit to be commissioned by BHEL at the refinery. Another unit of similar rating was commissioned at the same project in May, 2010. The first of their kind in Oman, these units will provide captive power generation for the oil refinery.

The Gas Turbine Generator units were engineered, manufactured and supplied by BHEL’s Hyderabad Plant while the state-of-the-art control system has been supplied by the company’s Bangalore works.

BHEL has already established a successful relationship with Petroleum Development Oman, a leading hydrocarbon exploration company, majority owned by the Government of Oman. The successful execution of this project will further enhance BHEL’s long-term visibility in the overseas petroleum sector for power plant equipment, which is expected to pave the way for similar opportunities from other hydrocarbon exploration and production majors worldwide.

The Sultanate of Oman is a key export market for BHEL with several benchmark references established by the company. BHEL has a unique distinction of installing 16 Gas Turbine sets with a cumulative capacity of more than 1,250 MW in Oman alone, from diverse sectors viz. petroleum, utilities and industry, a testimony to BHEL’s acceptability in the Omanese market.

BHEL has a rich and varied experience of supplying and installing over 1,00,000 MW of power plant equipment and has established its footprints in all the six continents of the world, spanning over 70 countries. So far, projects totaling to over 12,500 MW have been contracted from overseas market. BHEL is presently executing 45 contracts in 23 countries, which include major turnkey projects in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Libya, Syria and Sudan.

BHEL’s technical competence has earned worldwide acclaim and the company is taking long strides to become a major global player by further enhancing its presence in targeted international markets through consolidation in existing markets, widening the export base through expansion of its existing basket of products and services, and by entering new markets. Strategic business initiatives for further growth in overseas business include positioning BHEL as a regular EPC contractor in the global market both in utility and IPP segments; and exploring various opportunities for setting up overseas joint ventures and marketing offices.
