BHEL bags EEPC's Top Export Award for the 15th consecutive year.
For outstanding export performance, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won the top exporters award, amongst public and private sector companies in India, for the fifteenth year in succession.
Instituted by the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC), the 'All India Trophy for Top Exporters' has been bagged by BHEL in the 'Project Exports' category, for the year 2003-04. The award will be presented by the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Kamal Nath, on January 13, 2005.
BHEL has identified overseas business as a major thrust area and has booked physical export orders worth nearly Rs.12,000 Million in the current fiscal. Major achievements include a landmark turnkey contract for two power projects from PDO Oman. In addition, the company has made inroads into two new markets namely Ethiopia and Surinam.
The order from Oman has been won in the face of stiff International Competition on the basis of online internet bidding, from Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), a company, majority owned by the Government of Oman with the balance shareholding by Royal Dutch Shell, Partex and Total.
With this order, BHEL supplied generating sets will account for over 40% of PDO's installed generating capacity, demonstrating the confidence that PDO has in BHEL's capabilities. Apart from this, BHEL is presently executing three orders for compressor packages in Oman. In fact, BHEL has so far secured orders close to Rs.16,000 Million from PDO, during its seven years association.
BHEL has also made a foray into the Ethiopian market, outbidding Chinese and other multinational companies, with the first ever order from Ethiopia for setting up 230 kV substations on EPC basis. The World Bank-funded contract has been placed on BHEL by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO).
Significant successes in its international operations have spurred the company to achieve quantum growth in its export business in the current financial year and beyond by consolidation in existing markets and widening its export base through expansion of existing basket of products and services and entering new markets.
Having established its references in around 60 countries, BHEL's technical competence has earned worldwide acclaim. These references encompass turnkey thermal, hydro and gas-based power projects and substation and rehabilitation projects, besides a wide variety of products.
