BHEL bags Maiden order for 660 MW Steam Turbine Generator Sets with Supercritical parameters under International Competitive Bidding; Rs.14,740 Million NTPC Contract for 1,320 MW Barh Power Project Stage-II

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won its first commercial order for 660 MW Steam Turbine Generators with supercritical parameters against International Competitive Bidding (ICB).

Valued at Rs.14,740 Million, the contract has been placed on BHEL by NTPC Ltd. for setting up the 2x660 MW Steam Turbine Generator package at Barh Thermal Power Project Stage-II, located about 75 km from Patna in Bihar.

Significantly, the supercritical steam parameters for this project are higher than those for the other supercritical projects presently under installation by NTPC at Sipat and Barh Stage-I, resulting in higher efficiency.

Also against ICB, BHEL had earlier bagged the order for the Steam Generator (Boiler) package for the same power project from NTPC Ltd., and the present order is a testimony to the customer's confidence in the company's capabilities and proven technological excellence.

BHEL's scope of work in the contract envisages design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of two Steam Turbine Generator sets of 660 MW each along with associated auxiliaries.

For the project, the Turbine Generators will be manufactured by BHEL at its Haridwar works, while the company's Hyderabad plant will supply the Pumps and Heaters. The construction of the plant will be undertaken by BHELs Power Sector – Eastern Region, Kolkata.

In addition to the orders for generating equipment with supercritical parameters for Barh power project, BHEL has recently won its first order for 800 MW supercritical boilers from APGenco. The order for the 2x800 MW Steam Generator package at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh was won by the company, outbidding the Larsen and Toubro - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) combine in a global tender.

BHEL has also signed a MoU with TNEB for the formation of a joint venture company for setting up a 2x800 MW Supercritical Thermal Power Project at Udangudi in Tiruchendur Taluk of Tuticorin District in Tamil Nadu, with principal equity stake from BHEL and TNEB. The project will be the first supercritical power project in the state of Tamil Nadu and will strengthen the power availability in the state.

BHEL is building Capacity and Capability to contribute fully for meeting the power forecast for the 11th Plan and beyond. For this, the company has enhanced its manufacturing capacity to 10,000 MW per annum which is being further enhanced to 15,000 MW per annum by December 2009 in the next two years at a total investment of Rs.42,000 Million. BHEL has also taken broad steps like shift in operational focus from Product to Project and implementation of effective Project Management Systems.
