BHEL bags Maiden order for 800 MW Supercritical Boilers under International Competitive Bidding; Rs.25,000 Million APPDCL Contract for 1,600 MW Krishnapatnam Power Project

Outbidding the L and T-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) combine in an open global tender, engineering major Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won its first commercial order for the supply of 800 MW Steam Generators Boilers with supercritical parameters. With this, the company has once again demonstrated its international competitiveness.

Valued at Rs.25,000 Million, the contract has been placed on BHEL by Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Limited (APPDCL), a joint venture of APGenco and ILFS for setting up the 2x800 MW Steam Generator (SG) package at Krishnapatnam in Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh.

BHEL's scope of work in the contract envisages manufacture, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of the Steam Generators and associated auxiliaries including Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs).

For the project, the supercritical Boilers will be manufactured by BHEL at its Tiruchirapalli works in Tamil Nadu, while the company's Hyderabad and Ranipet plants will supply the Coal Mills and the ESPs, respectively.

BHEL has also recently signed a MoU with TNEB for the formation of a joint venture company for setting up a 2x800 MW Supercritical Thermal Power Project Udangudi in Tiruchendur Taluk of Tuticorin District in Tamil Nadu, with principal equity stake from BHEL and TNEB. The project will be the first supercritical power project in the state of Tamil Nadu and will strengthen the power availability in the state.

BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 600 MW rating in the sub critical range and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating. So far, orders for 69 numbers of 500/600 MW rating sets have been won, of which 33 have been commissioned. Having demonstrated its track record in successfully establishing new technologies to serve the nations power sector, BHEL has now introduced 800 MW thermal sets with supercritical parameters.

BHEL is building Capacity and Capability to contribute fully for meeting the power forecast for the 11th Plan and beyond. For this, the company has enhanced its manufacturing capacity to 10,000 MW per annum which is being further enhanced to 15,000 MW per annum in the next two years at a total investment of Rs.42,000 Million. BHEL has also taken broad steps like shift in operational focus from Product to Project and implementation of effective Project Management Systems.
