BHEL outbids European MNCs and Indian majors; Bags World Bank-funded 400 kV Turnkey Substation contract in Maharashtra

New Delhi, February 26: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has once again demonstrated its competitive edge by bagging a World Bank-funded turnkey contract for a new 400 kV substation and extension of three existing substations in Maharashtra, against stiff competition from European MNCs and Indian companies.

Valued at Rs.1,440 Million, the order has been placed on BHEL by Power Grid Corporation of India (PowerGrid) for setting up a new 400 kV Substation at Wardha and extensions of 400 kV Substations at Seoni, Akola Aurangabad, associated with the Sipat Super Thermal Power Project Stage-II supplementary Transmission System.

Aimed at improving power supply in the Western Region, the project will be commissioned by BHEL in a tight schedule of just 19 months.

BHEL's scope of work in the contract envisages design, engineering, manufacture, testing, supply, erection and commissioning of Auto Transformers, Shunt Reactors, Circuit Breakers, 400 kV and 220 kV Instrument Transformers, Control and Relay Panels, String Insulators and other associated auxiliaries, in addition to complete civil works.

BHEL undertakes turnkey projects from concept to commissioning for Extra High Voltage (EHV) substations in India and abroad besides reactive power compensation schemes and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems.

For PowerGrid, BHEL has earlier set up 400 kV substations at Gazuwaka, Kanpur, Allahabad, Trivandrum and Siliguri, besides undertaking extensions of existing 400 kV substations at Jamshedpur, Rourkela, Farakka, Malda, Jeypore, Vijaywada, Madurai and Sriperumbdur. Similar substations presently being set up for the same customer include Bareilley, Ballia, Raibareilly, Pithoragarh and Arasur, besides extensions of substations at Lucknow, Kanpur, Bina, Khandwa, Nagda, Rajgarh and Udumalpet.

In overseas markets, BHEL has executed turnkey substation projects in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Libya, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana, Nepal, Kenya, Philippines, Laos etc., and is consolidating its strength to harness potential in other parts of the world.
