BHEL outbids European MNCs and Indian majors; Wins landmark contract for Transformers and Busducts for Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has once again demonstrated its competitive edge by winning the largest-ever contract for the manufacture and supply of power transformers and busducts, against stiff competition from European MNCs and Indian companies.

Cumulatively valued at nearly Rs.2,400 Million, the orders have been placed on BHEL by Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL), a Tata Power company, for their upcoming 4,000 MW (5x800 MW) Ultra Mega Power Project at Mundra in Gujarat. The orders have reinforced BHEL’s leadership status as well as the company’s pioneering role in developing new technologies.

Significantly, the order for 40 transformers with a cumulative capacity of 5,872 MVA includes five sets of India’s highest rating 930 MVA, three phase transformer banks. The order for busducts is also the first order in the country for 800 MW thermal sets. While the generator transformers for the first unit have to be delivered by February 2010, supplies for the fifth unit will completed by June 2011.

BHEL is the largest manufacturer of transformers in India, having supplied more than 4,000 transformers, aggregating to over 3,00,000 MVA in cumulative capacity for transmission and distribution networks, which are the mainstay of the Indian Grid. These have been supplied to all major utilities in the country including SEBs, NTPC, PowerGrid, etc.

On the export front, the company has supplied transformers to more than 20 countries around the world including Greece, Egypt, Libya, Oman, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Zambia.

As a result of increased customer focus and renewed efforts for sustained presence in varied industrial segments, BHEL’s Industry Sector business segment recorded an all time high order inflow of Rs.78,600 Million in the last fiscal (2007-08) – an increase of 20 per cent over the previous year.
