BHEL outbids European MNCs in International Competitive Bidding; Bags Rs.1,990 Crore Contract for installing 2 sets of 500 MW each at Ennore

Outbidding leading European equipment suppliers under International Competitive Bidding (ICB), Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won an order for the supply and installation of the Steam Generator and Steam Turbine Packages at the upcoming Vallur Thermal Power Project at Ennore in Tamil Nadu, involving two units of 500 MW each.

Valued at over Rs.19,900 Million, the orders for the Greenfield power project have been placed on BHEL by NTPC-Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited (NTECL), a joint venture company of NTPC and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB).

Significantly, the contract comes close on the heels of three mega contracts for the supply and installation of seven sets of 500 MW each at Jhajjar STPS (3x500 MW), Koderma TPS (2x500MW) and Durgapur Steel TPS (2x500 MW) and is a testimony to the customer’s confidence in BHEL’s capabilities and proven technological excellence.

Being set up under Govt of India’s Mega Power Project policy, the project is targetted for synchronization during the 11th Plan and will add nearly 24 million units every day to the grid on commissioning.

BHEL’s scope of work involves design, engineering manufacture, supply, and erection and commissioning of Steam Generators, Turbine Generators, Electrostatic Precipitators and Associated Auxiliaries, besides state-of-the-art Controls and Instrumentation (C&I) system.

BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 500 MW rating and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating. So far, orders for 60 numbers of 500 MW rating sets have been won, of which 31 have been commissioned.

Having demonstrated its track record in successfully establishing new technologies to serve the nation’s power sector, BHEL is now poised to introduce 800 MW thermal sets with supercritical parameters. BHEL has equipped itself to produce thermal power equipment for 800 MW sets and above, suited to Indian conditions, using Indian as well as imported coal. In addition, the company is shoring up its capability for higher rating Hydro sets and advanced class Gas Turbines to cater to upcoming market requirements.

Aimed at equipping itself to meet the country's power capacity addition targets in the 11th plan and beyond, BHEL is enhancing its manufacturing capacity in the next three years, from the current level of 6,000 MW to 15,000 MW per annum.
