BHEL proves international competitiveness; wins contract for 250 MW Thermal Power Plant from Tata Power Company

In the face of stiff competition from Chinese and Korean equipment suppliers, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has achieved a major success by bagging a prestigious contract for a 250 MW Thermal Power Station (TPS).

The contract has been won from Tata Power Company (TPC) under competitive bidding. Notably, this is the first order secured by BHEL where the boiler will be designed to suit firing of imported coal.

TPC has reposed its confidence in BHEL by placing the order for design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of main plant package for Unit-8 of Trombay TPS in Maharashtra.

For TPC, BHEL has earlier supplied equipment and provided services for 500 MW Units 5&6 and the combined cycle plant at Unit-7 at the same power plant.

The equipment for the present contract will be manufactured at BHEL’s Haridwar, Trichy, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bhopal and Jhansi Plants, while the company’s Power Sector - Western Region, will be responsible for erection and commissioning of the equipment.

BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for the manufacture of thermal sets of up to 500 MW rating and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating suited to Indian conditions using Indian as well as imported coal. Till date, all the eleven 250 MW thermal units operating in the country have been supplied and commissioned by BHEL.

Presently, BHEL is executing orders for two units each of 250 MW capacity for Korba East TPS of CSEB, Lehra Mohabbat TPS of PSEB, Bhilai Expansion TPS of BESCL and Mejia and Chandrapura TPS of DVC, in addition to one unit each at Parli and Paras TPS of MSEB and Santaldih TPS of WBPDCL.

BHEL has also recently won its single-largest contract from an Independent Power Producer (IPP) for a thermal power project comprising 4 units of 250 MW each, in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh.
