BHEL wins FICCI Award 2005 for Environmental Conservation & Pollution Control.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has become the first engineering organization in the country to have won the coveted 'FICCI Award for Environmental Conservation & Pollution Control'.

Carrying a Plaque and a citation, the prestigious award was presented by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh to the Chairman and Managing Director of BHEL, Mr. Ashok K. Puri, at a ceremony organized as part of FICCI's AGM, here today.

In recognition of its commitment and outstanding contribution towards preservation of the environment, an eminent jury headed by the Former Chief Justice of India, Mr. P.N. Bhagwati, unanimously selected BHEL's Trichy Unit for the 2005 Award.

Instituted in the year 1967, FICCI Awards are presented annually to promote individual, corporate and institutional initiative in economic, social and scientific areas.

BHEL shares the growing concern on issues related to environment and occupational health & safety (OHS), and is committed to protect the environment in and around its own establishment, and to provide safe and healthy environment to all its employees. For fulfilling these obligations, a Health, Safety & Environmental Policy has been formulated and implemented through management systems.

BHEL has been awarded the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems Certification and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems Certification from M/s Det Norske Veritas (DNV). Under the UNDP programme for specialized services in the area of Environment, BHEL has also set up a Pollution Control Research Institute.

BHEL's commitment to environmental issues is an integral part of its core business. Technology upgradation has also been done to minimize environmental impact of fossil energy products, by way of low-NOx oil/ gas burners, circulating fluidised bed combustion boilers etc.
