BHEL wins mega turnkey contract for 2x500 MW Mejia TPS
New Delhi, January 24: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won a contract for setting up two units of 500 MW each at Mejia Thermal Power Station (TPS) in West Bengal, on turnkey basis.
The order has been placed on the company by Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) who have once again reposed confidence in BHEL's proven technological excellence and capability in executing projects of this magnitude. Notably, BHEL sets account for 12,000 MW or nearly 69% of the cumulative generating capacity in the Eastern region.
Slated for synchronisation during the 11th Plan, the project will add nearly 24 million units every day to the grid on completion, a major portion of which will be transmitted to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
Mejia TPS is already equipped with 4 BHEL-built units of 210 MW each, while the company is executing a turnkey contract for setting up another 2 units of 250 MW each at the project, which are in an advanced stage of commissioning.
BHEL’s scope of work in the contract envisages manufacture, supply, erection testing and commissioning of Steam Turbines, Generators, Boilers, associated Auxiliaries, Balance of Plant and Electricals besides state-of-the-art Controls & Instrumentation (C&I), Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) and Switchyard, including complete civil works.
The Turbine Generators and Boilers will be manufactured at the company’s Haridwar and Trichy plants respectively, while the C&I system will be supplied by BHEL’s Electronics Division, Bangalore. The company’s Hyderabad plant will manufacture the Coal Mills and Boiler Feed Pumps and the Electricals and Switchyard equipment will be supplied by BHEL's Bhopal and Jhansi plants. BHEL's Ranipet plant will manufacture and supply the ESPs.
BHEL has fully established state-of-the-art technology for manufacture of thermal sets up to 500 MW rating and has the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating for power projects, suited to Indian conditions, using Indian as well as imported coal. So far, the company has won orders for 44 numbers of 500 MW rating sets, of which 27 sets have been commissioned.
Aimed at gearing up to meet the country's capacity addition targets towards the agenda of providing ‘Power to all by 2012’, BHEL has invested more than Rs.12,000 Million for holistic modernization and capacity expansion of its facilities from 6,000 MW per annum at present to 10,000 MW per annum. BHEL also has plans to further increase its capacity to 15,000 MW as required by the country’s power sector. Besides, BHEL has taken necessary steps for upgradation/ introduction of new technologies and has tied up to acquire new technology to produce thermal power equipment with supercritical parameters for the next higher rating 800 MW sets and above.
