BHEL WORKS 24x7 TO MEET NATION’S POWER AGENDA

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has adopted various measures and taken steps to increase its productivity and enhance its output to meet the delivery/commissioning schedules of 11th plan projects.

Aimed at equipping itself to meet the country's power capacity addition targets in the 11th plan and beyond, BHEL is enhancing its manufacturing capacity in the next 3 years to 15,000 MW per annum with a total investment of around Rs.32,000 Million. Thus the company will augment its annual capacity by a massive 250% from the current level of 6,000 MW. Presently, BHEL is in the process of enhancing its manufacturing capacity from 6,000 MW to 10,000 MW per annum at a cost of Rs.12,000 Million and the enhanced capacity of 10,000 MW will be available by the end of 2007.

In order to meet the surge in demand and manufacturing load, critical machines are operated round the clock for all 24 hours on three shift operations. During the year 2006-07, BHEL manufactured and supplied nearly 7,000 MW of power plant equipment, which is much beyond its available capacity of 6,000 MW per annum through these measures.

BHEL has embarked on a major exercise of ‘Integrated Operations Management Programme’ to address all aspects of its operations to enhance its strategic positioning which include initiatives on competitiveness like Design-to-cost, Purchasing and Supply Management, Lean manufacture, IT effectiveness, Organizational focus on project deliveries, Structured product development, Enhancing system design capability, Reorienting for customer focus with greater emphasis on projects etc. In addition, the company has also taken broad steps like Shift in operational focus from Product to Project and implementation of effective Project Management Systems with necessary organizational infrastructure.

The company has taken steps for up gradation/introduction of new technologies. It has tied-up to acquire new technology to produce thermal power equipment with Super Critical parameters for next higher rating of 800 MW and above.

BHEL was set up with a mandate to make the country self-reliant in the manufacture of power plant equipment. Today, the company’s generating equipment (Thermal, Hydro, Nuclear & Gas) forms the backbone of the Indian energy Sector. Notably, BHEL sets generate 73% of the total power produced in the country while accounting for 65% of India’s installed generating capacity of over 1,25,000 MW ( as on 31/3/2007).

The company has unveiled a Strategic Plan 2012 that will enable it to achieve a turnover of US$10 Billion by 2011-12 i.e. two and a half times its present turnover of US$4 Billion.
