Mr. O.P. Bhutani appointed Director (E, R and D), BHEL
On his appointment as Director on the Board of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Mr. O.P. Bhutani, 56, has assumed charge as Director (Engineering, Research and Development) of the Navratna Public Sector engineering and manufacturing enterprise.
Prior to this, he was heading the company’s International Operations division, one of the three Business Sectors of BHEL, as Executive Director (International Operations), where he was responsible for all facets of International Business from marketing and business development to execution of orders and after sales support.
A Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering and an MBA from Delhi University, Mr. Bhutani has 34 years of diversified and versatile professional experience of working in various functions of BHEL including Marketing & Business Development; Project Execution; Construction & Management; Product Design & Engineering; Operations and Planning & Strategic Management. He has also undergone management training at Oxford, UK.
As Business Sector Head and at various levels in the International Operations Division, he has played a key role in establishing BHEL on the world map with overseas references now spanning over seventy countries in all the six continents and a twenty-fold increase in overseas business in the last one decade. His visionary leadership provided impetus to execution of large projects with deliverance orientation and his focussed approach supported by strategic tie-ups, has been instrumental in establishing BHEL’s presence in several new markets. He also pioneered BHEL’s global ‘Strategic Plan 2012’, to transform BHEL into a global player.
Earlier, during his stint in the Industry Sector business segment of BHEL, Mr. Bhutani headed the Transportation and Defence business segments, where he initiated and facilitated strategic steps to fill critical technology gaps as also initiatives for diversification.
Mr. Bhutani also served as head of Oman Operations of BHEL and as Project Manager of one of BHEL’s prestigious power projects in Oman. As Project Head for this Advanced-class Gas Turbine based Qarn Alam Power Project in Oman, he piloted the project from concept-to-commissioning and handing over within the contracted schedule, recording many firsts in engineering like Soil Replacement Technology for rotating equipment foundation apart from a string of commendations from the client on achieving best design practices and completing the project with a flawless health and safety record.
Mr. Bhutani began his career in BHEL in January 1976 as an Engineer Trainee and after completion of training joined the Engineering function at BHEL’s Haridwar plant. As a part of the team of Engineering and Design Department in BHEL Haridwar, he was actively involved in successful indigenisation of governing systems for Hydro Plants.
He has represented BHEL at several fora including member of Trade Committee of CII, several working groups & Inter-Governmental Joint Commissions, high power Govt. Delegations and various trade bodies of India and has acted as a catalyst for a string of national level policy changes for growth of project exports.
